LM at EAT READ LOVE pop up dinner
Hosted by the lovely Natalie Hayllar of Eat Read Love, the night was an intimate gathering of foodies & creatives in a celebration of what we all love. Food & Art & sharing the experience!
I was delighted to be invited to launch my new collection of oils on linen KALEIDOSCOPE & talk on the inspiration behind the series & on my recent travels to New York City.
KALEIDOSCOPE. Like reflections on a wet road after a downpour, a shaft of light through a spring storm at dusk, a glint in your lovers eye or the colour of your heart, the things that we embrace whilst we're there but soon slip through our fingers to form another vision, in another moment. Through these multiple flashes of light & sensory recollections Kaleidoscope has filtered back to me. Recalling sunsets & the way light moves through the city, the punch of strong graffiti, tall buildings & in their shadows the secret entrances into luxurious worlds & caves of curiosities, the elements that juxtapose grit & the sublime right through to the elation of standing alongside those water lilies. Kaleidoscope is a collection of such things, elusive & punchy, delicate & powerful, frivolous & meaningful, colourful & dark, beautiful. LM
Held at the historic Balmain Wharf Apartments, we enjoyed stunning panoramic views across Sydney harbour & added another layer to the rich stories that pepper the area. Natalie & I set the scene throughout the day, transforming the Shipwright Suite into a pop up gallery & dining haven. The scent of heavenly peonies & David Austin roses filled the room & as all of the works were literally straight from the studio the smell of fresh oil paint made it all the more sensory, like you could dive into the paintings as you would the harbour on a sun filled day.
It was truly a union of shared love with flowers being beautifully arranged by The Sisters & iittala providing some stunning glassware to make the evening glimmer, spurred by the shadows & light in the oils themselves. Guests received beautiful gifts from Bindle, James Squire, Yellow Front Door & Catherine Saxelby & it was all captured by the lens of the lovely Nadean from Photography by Nadean.
As the night kicked on, Natalie stood to officially welcome everyone & say a few words, when the harbour lit up with fireworks! So stunning! Some events just have that kind of effect. It was lovely to speak on the new collection to such an intimate gathering & reveal a little more of my process as an Artist & the inspiration behind this body of work.
The rustic & seriously delicious menu was prepared by Mario's Kitchen. We grazed on a salad of fig, proscuitto & goats curd, warm olives & rustic breads, feasted on stuffed zucchini flowers, baked onions wrapped in pancetta, warm beetroot salads & rolled king george whiting with generous lashings of slow roasted baby tomatoes dotted with piquant olives, perfect. To finish, it was potted vanilla cobblers with stewed rhubarb & pomegranate. Gilbert wines were matched by Simon Gilbert, we especially loved the Pinot Grigio & Pinot Noir.
I just want to say a very special heartfelt thank you to the wonderful Natalie, it's been such a delight, a huge big thank you for inviting me to be a part of this very special evening, loved every minute of it! Also to everyone who attended, Blog Society, Luisa Brimble, it was lovely to share your side of the table & to everyone who's attention the new collection KALEIDOSCOPE has captured, it's been a pleasure to connect & I look forward to sharing more works & more journeys with you all soon!
